Mother’s Day in Catalonia

In Catalonia, as in most Mediterranean cultures, life revolves around family. Unsurprisingly, the mother and the grandmother are usually the people that keep the whole family together.

Back at home, we celebrate Mother’s Day on the first Sunday of May and its origins are linked to religion. And of course, if we’re talking about a traditional celebration in Catalonia, then food must be involved.

It’s very common that sons and daughters give their mums and nans chocolates and flowers. Sometimes the youngest will even bake some cakes or biscuits themselves.

As well as celebrating with lots of sweets at home, many families will opt for eating out. Despite it not being a festive day, Sundays are a day in which many people won’t work and that makes the perfect occasion to celebrate on this special day.

Whether you celebrate Mother’s Day on the English or Catalan date, at home our out, we want to wish them a lovely day in the company of their loved ones.
